This street is built on the site of the old town walls and a filled in moat. In 1809 this street was damaged by cannon fire from the French Army from the other side of the river. In the 1930's this street was built up by banks, insurance companies and retail firms. It is named after the Russian writer M Gorky. In 1938 a meeting of the group "Citizens for the protection of the republic" took place in no.11. In 1939 the Slovak Olympic delegation met in this building.
