The Main square can be found in the heart of the old town.
This was the most important square in the Bratislava of the Middle Ages. Today the area is still the centre of the historical part of the town. The original name "Market Square" (Trhove namestie) from the 14th century was later changed to "Main Square" (Hlavne Namestie) when not only trade but all the civic life of the town (gatherings for executions and celebrations). Many of the building around the square have a gothic skeleton and some still boast towers that once performed a defensive role.
